Frequently Asked Questions
What is alcohol flush reaction?
Alcohol flush reaction is a temporary reddening of the face, neck, or chest after drinking alcohol. It happens when the body cannot break down acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol, fast enough. It can also cause a rapid heartbeat, nausea, headache, and warmth in the skin.
Why does my face turn red when I drink alcohol?
Your face turns red because acetaldehyde builds up in your blood and widens blood vessels near the skin. This usually comes from a reduced-function ALDH2 enzyme, a genetic variant common in people of East Asian descent. Some medications and sensitivities can also contribute.
Is alcohol flush dangerous?
Flushing is a sign that your body processes alcohol less efficiently. Research links the ALDH2 variant combined with regular drinking to a higher risk of esophageal cancer. Drinking less, or not at all, is the most reliable way to lower that risk. Talk to a doctor if you flush often.
Can alcohol flush be cured or prevented?
No. The ALDH2 variant is inherited and cannot be changed. Limiting or avoiding alcohol is the only reliable way to prevent the reaction. Antihistamines and supplements may mask the redness, but they do not fix the enzyme problem or remove the health risks.
What helps reduce a hangover?
Drinking water, eating before and while you drink, pacing yourself, and getting enough sleep help the most. Electrolytes and B vitamins may ease some symptoms. No product has been proven to fully prevent a hangover. Drinking less is the most effective method.
Do alcohol flush supplements really work?
Evidence is limited. Some ingredients, such as antioxidants and B vitamins, are studied for their role in alcohol metabolism. Most supplements are not FDA-approved to treat or prevent flushing or hangovers. Check the ingredients, avoid mixing them with medications without advice, and talk to a healthcare professional first.
